FAMOUSLY DESCRIBED BY PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT AS ‘A DATE WHICH WILL LIVE IN INFAMY’, THE JAPANESE AIR RAID ON THE US NAVY AT PEARL HARBOR ON 7 DECEMBER 1941 LED THE UNITED STATES TO DECLARE WAR ON JAPAN AND FORMALLY ENTER WORLD WAR TWO ALONGSIDE THE ALLIES, INCLUDING BRITAIN AND THE COMMONWEALTH.

The United States had fought alongside the British Empire during the First World War, and in both world wars American servicemen and women joined the armed forces of Canada, Britain and other Commonwealth countries before their nation officially entered the conflict. Some had recently emigrated while others simply wanted to fight for the Allied cause. Many crossed the border into Canada to enlist with the Canadian Infantry or Royal Canadian Air Force, while others travelled to Britain to fly with the Royal Air Force or serve in the British Army.

Today, the CWGC commemorates more than 140 American service personnel and civilians at 51 sites in 16 countries and territories worldwide. A further 4,200 individuals who died while serving with Commonwealth forces are listed in the CWGC database with next-of-kin details that suggest a family link to the United States.
