From December 2016 to April 2017, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission will be remembering the events of 75 years ago, and reflecting on those who lost their lives and who are now commemorated by the CWGC across several countries in the region, as well as in the United Kingdom.

On 7 December 1941, Japanese forces attacked the American naval base of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, bringing the United States of America into the Second World War. Several hours earlier, Japanese forces had begun to land on the Malay Peninsula. On 8 December, they attacked British-controlled Hong Kong. This marked the beginning of a rapid and dramatic advance across the European colonial territories of South-East Asia.
